<image:title>Programme - Lecture: ‘‘The Significance of Bodhráns & Bones in Traditional Irish Music’’ presented by Junior Davey - Junior Davey</image:title>
<image:caption>The name Junior Davey is synonymous with bodhrán and bones playing in traditional Irish music circles and Junior’s longstanding dedication to his art is deeply rooted in a sense of place and a great understanding of the musical legacy he is steeped in and has been surrounded by all his life. A native of Clooneigh, Gurteen, Junior’s dad Andy was a fiddle player with his own distinctive style but very much reflecting the style of the area of Gurteen and South Sligo. This Wednesday afternoon presentation will put the spotlight on the percussive interpretation of the music and tunes and will be a fitting interlude during this year’s summer school, sitting perfectly between the much anticipated Tribute Concert on Monday night honouring Junior Davey’s legacy over many years as tutor and the Thursday evening recital, featuring Junior and his Bodhrán class – always a highlight of the week.</image:caption>

<image:title>Programme - Lecture: ‘‘Music and Songs of West Limerick’’ presented by Donie Nolan - Donie Nolan</image:title>
<image:caption>Join musician and singer Donie Nolan on the Friday afternoon of this year’s summer school for an informal hour or more of music and song from his native area of West Limerick. Donie, leader of Donie Nolan & Taylor’s Cross Ceili Band, is one of many renowned musicians and singers from this part of the country, an area steeped in a rich tradition of music, song and dance. Names such as the Mulcahy Family and the Murphys from Abbeyfeale come to mind as well as a flurry of West Limerick box players including Derek Hickey, Dan Brouder, Domhnaill de Barra, Pa Foley, William Larkin, Gerald Culhane and the aforementioned Mick Mulcahy and Donal Murphy. Singers Con Greaney and Liam Woulfe, both from Athea, West Limerick, are just two names that spring to mind – indeed Liam’s dad Timmy Woulfe has been a regular attendee at Pat Murphy’s Set Dancing workshops and the céilithe in St Brigid’s Hall at the South Sligo Summer School down the years. Following Donie’s presentation on Friday afternoon, he and his band will be playing for the Friday night Céilí. A great day for West Limerick in South Sligo as we welcome them back to Tubbercurry after a brief absence of a few years.</image:caption>

<image:title>Programme - Lecture: ‘‘Harmonious Traditions: Exploring fiddle and flute Duets in South Sligo and East Mayo’’ presented by John Wynne & John McEvoy - John McEvoy & John Wynne</image:title>
<image:caption>John McEvoy & John Wynne The distinctive sound of a fiddle and flute duet is particularly associated with this area and in their presentation, John McEvoy & John Wynne, both deeply rooted in the tradition of fiddle and flute duet playing, will share their love and knowledge of this particular duet combination. When one thinks of fiddle and flute duets from the area, the names Peter Horan & Fred Finn and Jimmy Murphy & James Murray immediately come to mind as well as the fiddle and flute duet combination of Tommy Healy & Johnny Duffy. This is just to name a few. In more recent times, the fiddle and flute duet playing of Philip Duffy & Liam Kelly, Oisín Mac Diarmada & Damien Stenson and Cian & Caoimhe Kearins for example, all in their own way reflect influences from the South Sligo/East Mayo style of those duet players gone before them. This link will bring you to the PDF of the booklet published by Topic Records to accompany the album ‘Memories of Sligo’, a recording of Tommy Healy and Johnny Duffy, with Reg Hall on piano accompaniment, recorded in London in the mid 1970’s. Tommy was from the village of Montiagh, a small cluster of houses in Curry parish near the Mayo border. He and Johnny were second cousins, Johnny’s grandmother and Tommy’s grandfather being brother and sister. The two cousins both emigrated to London in the mid 1940’s. <image:title>Programme - Whistle (Advanced) w/ Deirdre Collis - Deirdre Collis A native of Collooney, Co. Sligo, Deirdre comes from a great musical family well-known in traditional music circles throughout the country. From a very early age Deirdre's talent for music became obvious as she played at Fleadhanna and Feiseanna with her father Tom, and sisters Patricia and Fionnuala. Before long, her distinctive traditional style led to her achievement of winning All-Ireland titles at all levels on three different instruments, the button accordion, flute and tinwhistle. Over the years Deirdre has toured extensively with Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann, including America, Canada and England where she captivated audiences with her performances. With her family she was also part of the highly acclaimed Owenmore Ceili Band who played throughout Ireland at concerts and céilithe and they featured at many musical events in those years, including the Inter Celtic Festival in Lorient, Brittany. In more recent times, Deirdre and members of the Collis/Kearins Family, including her husband Sylvie Golden, niece and nephew Caoimhe & Cian Kearins and her sisters Patricia and Fionnuala, have put together a full concert performance which audiences are enjoying thoroughly, given the depth and breadth of musicality being shared onstage at these events.</image:title>

<image:title>Programme - Set Dancing (All Levels) w/ Pat Murphy - Pat Murphy</image:title>
<image:caption>Pat Murphy’s earliest memories from his childhood go back to when the Ballycommon Set, which was called the Plain Set at home, and the Cashel Set were the only ones they knew about. From Upperchurch, in County Tipperary, his father Jack played the accordion and he played for house dances in earlier years. Pat learned to play music from him, so his first connection with Irish Set Dancing was as a musician. As children, they also learned to dance at home with their parents and neighbours. In the early 1980’s, when Pat was playing music with a few friends for a Scór Set Dancing Competition, he was asked to dance in their Club’s competition team, as one of the male dancers was injured during rehearsals. He danced, they won and the rest is history! Pat’s travels over more than 30 years have now taken him to every county in Ireland and to most countries in Mainland Europe, including France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Denmark, Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, Spain, Portugal, the Czech Republic and Russia. Some of the best recent Dance Festivals in Pat’s experience have taken place in France, Italy and Germany. He has visited many parts of America, including, California, Seattle, Chicago, Milwaukee, Florida and New York. He has travelled to Canada, to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa. His travels have also enabled him to teach in Japan, Australia and New Zealand. In April 2018, Pat visited Australia for the third time and it was wonderful to have more than 100 dancers taking part in the set dance classes in Melbourne. In 1994, Pat was invited by Irish Publisher Mercier Press to write a book on Irish Set Dancing. His first book, entitled ‘Toss the Feathers, Irish Set Dancing’ was published in 1995. It contained 64 dances and became the first standard reference Book for Set Dancers world wide. Since then five more dance books have been published, the latest officially launched at the beginning of 2018. Together, the five books form a complete anthology of Irish Set Dancing from the revival in the 1970s to 2019. Toss the Feathers, Irish Set Dancing (1995) The Flowing Tide, More Irish Set Dancing (2000) Apples in Winter, Irish Set and Social Dancing (2009) Tabhair Dom Do Lámh, Irish Set and Social Dancing (2014) Come West Along the Road, Irish Set and Social Dancing (2017) Pat has also produced some instructional DVDs on Set Dancing, the first recorded during his time living in Westport, County Mayo and others recorded during the South Sligo Summer School here in Tubbercurry and at the Joe Mooney Summer School in Drumshanbo.</image:caption>

<image:title>Whistle - Whistle (Advanced) w/Deirdre Collis - Deirdre Collis A native of Collooney, Co.

<image:title>Guitar - Guitar (Improver/Intermediate) w/ Ray Coen - Ray Coen</image:title>
<image:caption>Ray Coen hails from Drumiskabole, Ballisodare, County Sligo and has many years experience as both a guitar and fiddle player. His first musical memory is singing and dancing in the family kitchen. He got his first guitar at age 11, but didn’t tune it until he was 13. Into his teens, he turned to electric guitar, playing Rock’n’Roll and Heavy Metal with his first bands Bad Taste and China Red. Eventually the Sligo traditional music scene started calling to him, and he started playing mandola, banjo and fiddle. In 2000 with Rodney Lancashire he recorded an album of traditional songs called Mactíre. In 2002 he joined Deirde Byron-Smith, Anna Houston and Tommy Scanlon for the Cadenza album Attic Notes where he contributed original songs and tunes. 2009 saw his solo album Out of Sight released. Since then he has performed all over Ireland, England, Europe and Japan playing and recording original, traditional and World music. He is currently a member of The Craic Addicts, The Atlantic Orchestra and No Crows and is touring with fellow No Crows musician Steve Wickham this year, having played at Celtic Connections in Glasgow earlier in the year as well as more recently in the Coleman Centre, Gurteen with upcoming gigs in the UK in early August. Ray has previously taught guitar at the summer school and we are delighted to welcome him back in 2025.</image:caption>

<image:title>Set Dancing - Set Dancing (All Levels) w/ Pat Murphy - Pat Murphy</image:title>

<image:title>Lectures - Interactive Talk: ‘‘Music and Songs of West Limerick, presented by Donie Nolan - Donie Nolan</image:title>
A great day for West Limerick in South Sligo as we welcome them back to Tubbercurry after a brief absence of a few years..</image:caption>

<image:title>Lectures - Interactive Talk: ‘‘Harmonious Traditions: Exploring fiddle and flute Duets in South Sligo and East Mayo’’ presented by John Wynne & John McEvoy - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>The distinctive sound of a fiddle and flute duet is particularly associated with this area and in their presentation, John McEvoy & John Wynne, both deeply rooted in the tradition of fiddle and flute duet playing, will share their love and knowledge of this particular duet combination. Mayo, began learning music at the age of 4 and through his teenage years began to accumulate numerous all-Ireland medals on whistle, bodhrán, drums, accordion and is a two time All-Ireland winning Champion on Melodeon and a senior All-Ireland Champion on the flute. He is one of the flute tutors at this year’s summer school. As an in demand front of house sound engineer Stephen has mixed well known acts such as We Banjo Three, Luka Bloom and Aldoc. He is involved in various recording projects and stage productions, including most recently a unique collaboration between the Ceol na nÓg Traditional Orchestra and the Sligo Academy of Music Sinfonietta which culminated in the world premiere of 'The North West Suite' performed on stage by over 100 young musicians at Sligo’s St Patrick's Festival in the outdoor setting of the newly designed Queen Maeve Square.</image:caption>

<image:title>History - South Sligo Summer School Scoil Samhraidh Shligigh Theas</image:title>
<image:caption>Established in 1987, the South Sligo Summer School of Traditional Music, Song and Dance is held annually in Tubbercurry during the second week in July. The official opening takes place on the evening of the second Sunday in July and there follows a packed programme of formal and informal events for the week, including masterclasses, céilithe, workshops, talks, concerts, sessions and lots more. There is a particular emphasis placed on the Sligo style of fiddle and flute playing and this, alongside an extended range of workshops and new innovative elements each year, attracts people of all ages and abilities from near and far to attend and spend a week of total immersion in the local culture here in our community. In recent times, all our activities are held in the town centre and we are very grateful to all stakeholders in our community for their support in ensuring the ongoing success of the summer school as an integral part of the annual calendar of arts and cultural events in our town and county.</image:caption>
